A-League Season 5: MatchDay One Review

The opening round of the A-League served up an historic banquet of upsets, mesmerising goals and high quality entertaining football.

The first game of season five kicked off in Melbourne with the reigning champions Melbourne Victory taking on the Central Coast Mariners. The Mariners threw the form book and their winless record of 2009 out the window with a 2-0 upset win over a luck lustre home team. Written off by everyone including this clueless football scribe the Central Coast Mariners spoilt the champion’s party in what was mostly a dour match.

Meanwhile a glorious Friday night in Adelaide saw last years beaten grand finalists Adelaide United triumph over a Socceroo filled Perth Glory 1-0. The Reds experience and knowledge gained from playing in the Asian Champions League and World Club Championship last year helping the home team get the win. Perth Glory will take time to gel considering the amount of new faces that are in the squad. Perth will feel the pressure more than the others because of the high profile names they have signed.

The game for the most part was played at a quick tempo and featured moments of quality play, nice inter-passing and strong challenges. Adelaide took the lead after 31 minutes with a disputed penalty that was given away by returning Socceroo defender Chris Coyne. Adelaide left back Scott Jamieson did his World Cup hopes no harm with an excellent performance.

It was an historic night for the A-League in Queensland as Australian football went tropical. North Queensland Fury had ex- Liver pool legend Robbie Fowler in the line up and wearing the captains arm band and even though he scored his presence could not stop Sydney FC get a somewhat lucky away win. World Cup hopeful John Aloisi was routinely booed by his own fans last season and went some way to redemption by scoring the opening and winning goal in a 3-2 win over the A-League new boys.

Sydney FC fan favourite Koffi Danning was also a standout, the 18 year old set up the first goal, lobbing a beautiful pass to set up Socceroos Striker Aloisi. The exciting winger then got the second goal with some individual brilliance in a round that was full of high quality play. Danning is one of the few players featured in an A-League promotion campaign that can actually do the tricks that are shown in the advertisement.

From the tropics of Townsville we travel south to the city of Brisbane where the Gold Coast United scored three goals of world class quality to beat state rivals Brisbane Roar 3-1. That’s one down and 26 more games to go Clive! New Zealand international Shane Smeltz and returning Socceroo Jason Culina got the first two goals with some fine finishing to make the score 2-0. The goal of round one came from Gold Coast’s 22 year old midfielder Robson. The former Flamengo player electrifying the Suncorp Stadium by running 40 metres through the middle of a non-existent Roar defence The Brazilian who was Gold Coast United’s best on field then finished the move with a superb finish. The Gold Coast United will be a team for all football fans to get excited about.

The final game of round one saw an entertaining, high scoring affair between Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix finish in a 3-2 win to the Novocastrians. Ljubo “the lip” Milicevic, new boy Chris Triantis and Jason Hoffman (2 goals) were the stand out performers for the Jets. Jason Naidovski scored the winning goal late in the game heading the ball in from a great Sean Rooney cross.

The first round of season five finished with 17 goals scored at an average of 3.4 goals a game. If this is a taste of what season five of the A-League has to offer then get set for an exciting season of high quality, entertaining football, it’s been worth the wait.
